Androcles and the Lion is an ancient folktale about a Roman slave, Androcles, who escapes from his cruel and oppressive masters. Along the way, Androcles happens upon a lion in great pain from a giant thorn in its paw. Kind Androcles not only helps to remove the thorn, but also befriends the lion and they take shelter together in a cave.
However, Androcles is soon recaptured and sentenced to be fed to a wild animal for his crime of running away. However, the very animal that Androcles is to be fed to is the same lion he helped. The lion, recognising his friend, refuses to eat Androcles. The emperor, moved by such a strong bond of friendship, pardons Androcles and releases the lion into his care.
Androcles and the lion is a classic tale about friendship and kindness. It shows how an act of kindness can have a powerful impact, and that true friendship can overcome any obstacle.
